There’s nothing like the thrill of competition to get your adrenaline surging and pulse racing. Whether it's athletic or intellectual, individual or team, against a goal, person or the world, competition is fun!
It's a thrilling way to learn words faster than previously imaginable. In public school trials, students using Verbocity's word learning technology proved that there is no practical speed limit to how fast they can learn words. When students realized they could go as fast as they want, they immediately started setting up their own word learning competitions. We responded by creating online contests, a hall of fame and lapel pins to make their accelerated word learning easier and more enjoyable. The best part is no one loses because everyone acquires a Grand Master vocabulary.
No. Students can set individual goals and strive to achieve them. However, most students who compete tend to learn words at rates 3 to 4 times faster than non-competitors.
Verbocity is the state-of-the-art literacy tool that is the world's fastest vocabulary builder. Public school students using Verbocity have learned over 500 words in 4 days and retained 98-100% of words studied 6 months later. Many of Verbocity's innovations are described below as well as key features and dashboard components.
The faster Verbocity students learn, the more they retain. The secret is our spaced repetition system. For every new word studied a student reviews 3 previously learned words. Our proprietary system of vocabulary sequencing, review and reinforcement produces practically perfect retention.
Contests have changed history. They've incentivized the discovery of solutions to great problems. Competitive vocabulary incentivizes students to grow and polish their verbal skills at record speeds and become vocabulary Grand Masters.
The first step in creating a program that teaches all the high-value, high-frequency words was identifying these Tier 1 and Tier 2 vocabulary words. Since such a list did not exist we had to create it. It took years of analysis but we compiled a list of nearly 10,000 words that represent a Grand Master vocabulary.
Students are often reluctant writers. Overcoming essay resistance can be a major obstacle with deep roots. Writing personal sentences for vocabulary words however, is simple, easy and fun. Teachers can tailor the Verbocity sentence writing feature to develop skilled, confident writers who are ready, able and willing to tackle any writing assignment.
When class is dismissed Verbocity goes to work. On average, Verbocity students do 80-90% of their word learning outside of class. That makes Verbocity a force multiplier. A force multiplier is a tool that lets you get more done with the same effort. Teachers who use Verbocity produce 10 to 20 times the vocabulary growth of non-Verbocity teachers.
Many children begin school with a word gap which is rarely reversed and ultimately develops into a lifelong achievement gap. Verbocity eliminates the disparity between vocabulary haves and have-nots in 15 min/day.
Verbocity is simple to use. A Verbocity concierge will get you and your students set up and answer any questions. Once your students begin to use it, you can review their sentences in your teacher module. As your students gain experience you can guide their sentence writing to achieve specific writing objectives. Below is a brief description of the tiles on your teacher dashboard.

A student's vocabulary is their most valuable asset. A Grand Master vocabulary is one that contains all the high-value, high-frequency Tier 1 and Tier 2 vocabulary words.
Tier 1 Words - 2,400 - Basic, highest frequency words. Used in everyday speech. Comprise 90% of all text. Although very common, many have multiple meanings and/or appear in challenging idioms and verb phrases.
Tier 2 Words - 7,600 - High frequency academic words that appear in all types of text across every domain. Comprise 9+% of all text. Critical to reading comprehension. More abstract than Tier 1 words.
A Verbocity lesson consists of a number of words (3, 5 or 20) followed by a retention exam (10, 20 or 30 questions). Students study each word and submit sentences using each word which is recorded in the database. When the user correctly matches the word with its definition in a retention exam the word is marked as learned.
From the Dashboard click on one of the following tiles: * Upper Left Tile - (Returning User Only) - Starts lesson using previously used word list * Peak Performance Word List - To select a grade level or test word list. * Pending Class Word List - To select a word list assigned by your teacher.
Click on Lesson Mode tile to select the length of lesson you prefer.
Students sometimes have to quit in mid-lesson. This can confuse various word counters and create glitches. To reset the counters click on the lesson mode tile and change the lesson mode. Then change back to your preferred mode.

A vocabulary sentence must be submitted for every word studied. To maximize growth and retention we suggest the following sentence guidelines:
Daily individual contest page tracks and displays the individual top learners over the last 24 hours.
Daily team contest page tracks and displays the teams who were the top learners each day.
Your Verbocity concierge can arrange private competitions of any duration on request.
Verbocity periodically inducts students who demonstrate superior performance into our Hall of Fame. We also have monthly and yearly most valuable player awards. Teachers can nominate individual students for these awards.
Verbocity lapel pins are a very effective student motivator. These pins signify that a student has learned a certain number of words. Schools can purchase a supply of award pins directly from Verbocity.
